Armenia won bronze at 2010 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Cup

Greco-Roman Wrestling: Armenia won bronze at World Greco-Roman Wrestling Cup 2010 held in Yerevan on February 13 and 14. In the seventh fight, Armenia’s Yuri Patrikeev (w/c 120 kg) beat Russia’s Alexander Yunoshkin. So, defeating Russians 4:3 in the team event, Armenian wrestlers came third, following Iran and Turkey. The tournament winners received money awards: $50 000, $30 000 and $20 000 respectively. Teams from Armenia, Russia, Iran, Hungary, Cuba, Turkey, Georgia and a team from Scandinavian countries were participating.

PanARMENIAN.Net - Winter Olympic Games Switzerland's Dario Cologna won the men's 15-kilometer freestyle cross-country race in his Olympic debut in Vancouver on Monday, completing the course in 33 minutes 36.3 seconds.

Armenia’s Sergei Mikaelyan fell 4 minutes behind the Olympic Champion and came 70th. Christine Khachatryan came 76th in women’s race.

Sweden's Charlotte Kalla won gold with a time of 24 minutes 58.4 seconds.

Football: On February 17, FC Banants held a regular control match with Anzhi (Makhachkala) in Antalya that ended 2:2. Banants will finish trainings in Antalya by holding another control match on February 20 and the next day will return to Armenia

Armenian vice champions, Mika was smashed 0:3 by Dinamo Kyev-2.

Boxing: Undefeated “King” Arthur Abraham (Germany) and his coach Uli Wegner moved training camp to Palm Springs, the United States. Abraham, who leads the tournament after the first round, will take on Andre Dirrell (USA) at the Super Six World Boxing Classic Group Stage 2 on March 6.

Abraham has already watched a few fights with Dirrell, including the last fight vs. Karl Froch (UK). “Dirrell is a very skilled, yet very awkward fighter. He is fast but I certainly want to leave the ring as a winner,” Abraham said.

Chess: Aeroflot Open chess tournament finished in Moscow on February17. Armenia played a draw in tournaments A1 and A2.

Gabriel Sargissian ranks 12 (5.5 points). Hrant Melkumyan and Arman Pashikian rank 31 and 32 respectively with 5 points. Zaven Andriasian is the 62nd (4 points). The winner is Le Quang Liem, Vietnamese Grandmaster (9 points).

During tournament А2, Tigran Kotanjian scored 5 points and finished his participation in Aeroflot Open, ranking 25. Davit Petrosyan is on the 44th position (4 points). Aleksei Pribrezhni (Russia) leads Tournament A2, scoring 6.5 points.

Tennis: Argentinean tennis player of Armenian descent David Nalbandian has booked a place in quarterfinal of Copa Telmex 2010 championship due in Buenos Aires.

David Nalbandian, visibly struggling with a right leg injury, fought his way to a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 win over Daniel Gimeno-Traver Wednesday evening. The former Copa Telmex champion missed three match point opportunities before securing the victory in two hours and 47 minutes.

After splitting the first two sets, Nalbandian held an early edge in the third. The Argentine led 2-0, aided by two consecutive doubles from the Spaniard. Nalbandian reached 5-3, but turned in an errant backhand on break point to drop serve. A second-set tie-break contained several shifts in momentum, as the Argentine gave away critical points at 3-1 and 6-5. Nalbandian regrouped to collect his fourth match point at 8-7, ending the evening with a heavy forehand.

Fencing: Armenia won't participate in World Youth Fencing Championship due on April 2 -10 in Baku, Artashes Madoyan, Secretary General of Armenian Fencing Federation told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

According to Artashes Madoyan, Federation’s decision on Armenia’s non-participation in the Championship “is for the good of our sportsmen.”
