Smbat Margaryan, Vladik Karapetyan win European Youth Weightlifting Championships gold

Weightlifting: Armenia’s Smbat Margaryan, (weight class 56kg) won gold at the European Youth Weightlifting Championships, which kicked off in Valencia, Spain, on May 17. Margaryan lifted 240kg in snatch, clean and jerk combination. Another gold medal went to Vladik Karapetyan (weight class 62kg). Karapetyan lifted 253kg in the snatch, clean and jerk combination, taking the lead over the Azerbaijani and Turkish weightlifters – Firudin Guliyev and Emre Buyukunlu.

PanARMENIAN.Net - Vardan Militosyan came 6th, lifting 235kg in the snatch, clean and jerk combination.

Lifting 163kg in the snatch, clean and jerk combination, Armenia’s Isabella Yalyan won silver.

Football: Coach Flemming Seritslev has published the list of footballers to play for Armenia in 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship Group 2 qualifier vs. Estonia on May 20. Halfback Artak Dashyan may pull out of match, following his injury at the recent training session.

The composition of the Armenian team for a friendly vs. Uzbekistan has also been determined.

Boxing: WBC/WBA super flyweight champion Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan (34-2-2, 27 KOs) will clash with durable Filipino Eric “The Maverick” Barcelona (51-17-4, 19 KOs) over twelve rounds for the vacant IBO bantamweight title at the Parramatta Leagues Club, Sydney, NSW, Australia on May 20. “I have never seen him fight but I heard he has never been stopped in 70 fights. I’m sure it will be a good fight. My training has been good and I am in good shape for this fight,” Darchinyan said.

On May 20, the Armenian boxing team will leave for Kyiv, Ukraine, to get prepared for the European Championships due June 4-13 in Moscow. Joint trainings in Kyiv will bring together Armenian, Russian, French and Hungarian teams. “Turkey may also join the trainings. Armenia will be represented by 11 boxers at the European Championships,” Armenia Chief Coach Rafael Mehrabyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter. According to him, all Armenian boxers are in a good physical shape and have no injuries.

Chess: The U.S. Chess Championship, which is under way in St. Louis championship hosts 24 chess players, including Armenia’s Varuzhan Akobian, Melikset Khachiyan and Levon Altounian. In the 6th round, Akobian and Khachiyan shared points with Yermolensky and Gurevich, while Altounian lost to Robert Hess. Currently, Varuzhan Akobian moved to the 6th place with 3,5 points; Khachiyan is the 20th place with 2 points while Altounian is the 24th place (1.5 points). Hikaru Nakamura is leading the championship with 4,5 points to his score.

Tennis: Argentine tennis player of Armenian descent David Nalbandian has pulled out of the French Open with a left hamstring injury. Nalbandian said he hopes to return in time to play Wimbledon, which begins June 21.

Armenian tennis team, including Khachatur Khachatryan, Ashot Gevorgyan, Harutyun Sofyan, Karo Pambukyan, Vahe Avetisyan (captain), winning 3 matches and losing 3, managed to hold out in the Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group III.

Pan-Armenian Games:Yerevan hosted a meeting of the World Committee of the Pan-Armenian Games, which brought together Committee President Armen Grigoryan, Armenian Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Arthur Petrosyan, as well as representatives of Armenian communities. The organization of 2011 Pan-Armenian Games was in the focus of the meeting.
