Shahan Kankhadaryan:

Position of Armenian community of Lebanon exemplary

PanARMENIAN.Net - Developments in Lebanon engross Armenia's attention, since the most numerous Armenian community lives there. Armenian Genocide survivors and their heirs, who found shelter in Lebanon, have become full-fledged Lebanese citizens and share hardships that befall their country. Editor-in-chief of Beirut-based Azdak newspaper Shahan Kankhadaryan comments on current situation to PanARMENIAN.Net.
How would you describe current domestic situation in Lebanon?

The presidential election is viewed as a core issue, which can tense the situation. Nevertheless, the crisis is much deeper and conditioned by the influence of outer forces. With shaky political system, Lebanon's domestic life is very complicated. Each state structure bases on the principles of communities living in the country, what leads to inner political movements in addition to interference from outside. The Lebanese problem compels attention of the entire international community. Officials from the U.S. or Europe are not waiting for a formal invitation to Beirut, where unprecedented diplomatic activity is observed. Lebanon produces an impression of an open international political space. Fortunately, all understand that the 'explosive' situation must not be escalated.

Do you think the President will be elected in the near future?

Talks between the opposing forces in Lebanon have activated recently, given the international diplomatic mission. The parliament sitting, during which the President had to be elected, was postponed for the seventh time. The reason is clear: with no consent on the presidential candidate, the meetings will have no legal force. The more so because the pro-ruling faction announced support to army commander general Michel Suleiman. According to the Constitution, presence 2/3 of the MPs is needed to elect the President.

However, there are political problems as well. The current government wasn't recognized by the former President and it may face some difficulties in this view. The Constitutional Council has not been formed either, Therefore, state structures are not functioning. Before the parliament election an army commander President, it should amend the Constitution for the purpose.

As to political consent, oppositionists press for a package agreement. It's obvious that the newly elected President will have to hold consultations with the Prime Minister and the government supporting him.

Would you comment on the position of Lebanese Armenians?

Speaking of position of the Armenian community of Lebanon, we should take account of three parties - AFR Dashnaktsutyun, Ramkavar-Azatakan and Hnchakyan - functioning in the country. All three differ in their approaches. However, when a political dialogue is needed, these three parties are reasonable enough to take a common stance, thus preventing any split among the community, which has always served as a peaceful bridge between opposing sides.

True, we are not safe now and the political field in Lebanon is dissociated. However, when speaking of the Armenian community, Lebanese politicians always point to the capability of the Armenian parties to highlight the interests of the state. As to common Armenian issues such the Genocide, NKR recognition, prevention of Turkey's scheming, Lebanese Armenian demonstrate perfect unity.

How strong is the Turkish factor in Lebanon?

Activation of the Turkish factor is being observed in Middle East. Turkish Prime Minister and Foreign Minister visited Lebanon lately. Let's not forget that Turkey has offered participation in the UN peacekeeping mission. The current government has recently appealed to Turkey for mediation to bring the country out of crisis. Turkish FM Ali Babacan personally attended the opening ceremony of Lebanese school and met with representatives of various political trends. This move should be eyed as Turkey's aspiration to secure an influential position in the region.
