There is difference between recognition of Palestine and Karabakh’s independence

PanARMENIAN.Net - Lecturer of the Foreign Relations Department at Saint Petersburg State University Alexander Sotnichenko said that many states are actually ready to recognize independence of the Palestinian Autonomy and there is nothing strange in it.

Almost all Arab states and other countries have already recognized Palestine, Sotnichenko told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

“There is nothing new in the Russian President’s statements made in Jericho. Do not forget that in 1946, as per a decision of the UN, two states – Jewish and Arab – should have been established on the mandated territory of Palestine. The problem is in the new state’s capital. Israel will not agree to Eastern Jerusalem’s becoming Palestine’s capital,” he said.

As for recognition of Nagorno Karabakh’s independence, according to him, there are some problems.

“And the main problem is that Nagorno Karabakh is not recognized even by Armenia. No progress will be recorded in the matter, unless it happens. However, in my opinion, Yerevan has its own reasons for not recognizing NKR’s independence,” the Russian expert said.

Sotnichenko pointed to the example of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is recognized only by Turkey. “But note that they have made the Northern Cyprus a member of the Organization of the Islamic Conference and promote it at the international arena,” Sotnichenko concluded.
