“Never Let Me Go” helmer in talks for Casey Affleck’s “Boston Strangler”

One of the most famous serial killers in U.S. history is creeping closer to the bigscreen with “Never Let Me Go” helmer Mark Romanek in talks to direct “Boston Strangler” for Warner Bros, Variety reported citing sources.

Casey Affleck is set to star in the crime drama and will also exec produce with Kevin McCormick producing through his Langley Park banner. Chuck MacLean wrote the script after originally pitching the project.

Based on the true story of serial killer Albert DeSalvo, which was made into a 1968 film starring Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda, the drama will follow a detective trying to solve the case of a notorious serial killer in Boston during the early 1960s. Sources say the original pitch had similarities to “Seven” and “Zodiac” that could fit Romanek’s knack for material with a dark tone.

Sarah Schechter will oversee the project for Warner Bros.

Romanek also directed the acclaimed indie “One Hour Photo” starring Robin Williams.
