Tom Hiddleston has signed on to star in High-Rise, an adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s classic British thriller to be directed by Ben Wheatley from a screenplay by the director’s regular collaborator Amy Jump, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Oscar-winning producer Jeremy Thomas worked with Hiddleston in Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive and High-Rise follows the actor's turns in The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World.

Hiddleston will next be seen in Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak and is currently starring on stage in the title role of Coriolanus in London’s West End.

Filmmaker Wheatley is currently riding high on the back of a trio of movies Sightseers, Kill List and A Field In England and is shooting the new season of Doctor Who for the BBC.

Thomas previously produced Ballard’s Crash by David Cronenberg, during which he became close to the author.

High-Rise centers on a new residential tower built in 1970s Britain, at the site of what will soon become the world’s financial hub and details the story a young doctor who becomes embroiled in a sinister world in the tower.

Wheatley said: “I am very excited to be working with Hiddleston on this project. He brings an intelligence, vulnerability and humour to his roles, be they art-house or blockbuster that will make Laing come alive. It's also a great privilege to be working with Ballard's seminal book.”

Hiddleston described Wheatley as “one of the most inspired directors in the U.K.” He added: “He [Wheatley] brings with him impeccable taste, courage, wit and singular brilliance: the perfect combination to realise the ambition of J. G. Ballard's unique vision.”

High-Rise is slated for a summer shoot in the U.K., with Thomas producing through Recorded Picture Company.
