Paul Thomas Anderson's “Inherent Vice” to premiere at New York Fest

Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of Inherent Vice has been slated for a world premiere at the New York Film Festival on Oct. 4, the Film Society of Lincoln Center announced, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The project, Anderson's follow-up to The Master, reteams the director with star Joaquin Phoenix, who will portray noirish detective Doc Sportello in the title. The cast of the film includes Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro and Owen Wilson. The film, an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel of the same name, is set for limited release in U.S. theaters on Dec. 12 before expanding its theater count in January.

"Inherent Vice is a journey through the past, bringing the texture of the early '70s SoCal counterculture back to full-blown life. It's a wildly funny, deeply soulful, richly detailed, and altogether stunning movie," said Kent Jones, New York Film Festival director and selection committee chair, in a statement.

The New York Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 26 through Oct. 12, will host the David Fincher thriller Gone Girl as its opening night gala screening title. The film stars Ben Affleck and features Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry.
