Amazon updates Kindle range with four tablets & two e-readers

Amazon has updated its Kindle range with six new devices, Digital Spy reveals.

Among the company's latest offerings are four Kindle tablets and two e-readers, which include a new top-end e-reader and Amazon's first tablet for children.

Amazon claims that the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 now has one million more pixels than the iPad Air, with 339ppi.

The device - which retails at $535 - is also lighter than its predecessor at 13 ounces, packs a Snapdragon 805 (2.5Ghz) processor and features a front-facing camera, as well as an 8-megapixel rear camera, capable of capturing videos at 1080p.

Further down the line is the Kindle Fire HD, which comes in a six-inch version for £79 and seven-inches for $194.

The new Kids Edition is a child-proof version of the flagship tablet with a rubber case and a tougher screen.

Parents are able to set time limits and prevent purchases from the app store to control usage, as well as receive photos their child has taken in their cloud account.

A UK release is yet to be confirmed, but the Kids Edition will be available in six-inch and seven-inch editions at $149 and $189 respectively.

Meanwhile, Amazon's main Kindle e-reader has been upgraded with double the amount of storage. It features an e-ink touchscreen and a faster processor costing just $96.

The Kindle Voyage is the firm's new top-end e-reader and the next generation of the Kindle Paperwhite.

Measuring in at less than 8mm thick and only 180 grams in weight, the Kindle Voyage costs $275. The device has a new PagePress function, allowing users to lightly press on the side of the e-reader to turn pages.

All of Amazon's new tablets and e-readers are available to buy in the UK from today (September 18) except the Fire HD Kids Edition tablet, which is currently U.S.-only.
