Nokia makes Here Maps service available to Android devices

Nokia has made its Here Maps service available to Android devices, according to Digital Spy.

The company - which remains as a telecoms equipment and computer software specialist after its devices sale to Microsoft - said that the app should work on any Android smartphone running 4.1 Jelly Bean or higher.

As the app remains in beta, it can only be downloaded via the Here website and not on Google Play.

The service was first brought to Android through Samsung Galaxy smartphones earlier this month.

Here not only provides up-to-date offline maps and turn-by-turn navigation, but also allows users to store their routes in the cloud and access them on another device.

It was originally available on the Apple App Store until late 2013 when it was pulled due to incompatibility issues with iOS 7.

In May, it was rumoured that an iOS version could relaunch alongside an Android counterpart, after a job listing appeared on LinkedIn seeking a software engineer to develop "location-based services applications" for third-party mobile devices.
