Google wants Android Auto built into car: report

Google is reportedly developing a refreshed version of its Android Auto service that will come built into car dashboards.

The new software will bring smart features to vehicle infotainment displays without the need for a synced smartphone, Digital Spy said citing Reuters.

The current build of Android Auto merely projects smartphone apps onto a car's dashboard, but the new system is said to be an integral part of the vehicle itself.

It is claimed that the revamped Android Auto will debut alongside Google's Android M operating system, which could launch late next year or in the first half of 2016.

Many of the first Android Auto-compatible vehicles are expected to be showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month.

Android Auto faces competition from Apple's CarPlay, as well as QNX's CAR Platform for Infotainment.
