Facebook to take on Foursquare with Place Tips new feature trial

Facebook has started testing a new feature on the News Feed which provides users with recommendations, Digital Spy reports.

The function could rival the likes of Foursquare and Yelp, but is only limited to a pilot in New York for the moment.

Facebook Place Tips will appear on the top of the News Feed on iPhone handsets with location services enabled.

When you are out and about, opening Place Tips will display a series of cards with info about the place you're at. If you choose to view Place Tips, you'll find things like posts and photos your friends have shared with you about that place.

It is also possible to see information about eateries, including posts from its page, popular menu items and upcoming events.

Tapping on Place Tips won't post the user's location on Facebook or show anyone where you are.

Facebook Bluetooth beacons are also being deployed to certain places, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and will send a signal to phones to help the social network show the right tips for the right place.
