Sir Ian McKellen stars as an elderly Sherlock Holmes in the international trailer for Mr Holmes, Digital Spy reports.

The adaptation of Mitch Cullin's novel A Slight Trick of the Mind follows a 93-year-old Sherlock Holmes as he makes a trip to Japan.

Having left Baker Street behind years earlier, Sherlock is still obsessed with a single unsolved case that led to his exile in a Sussex farmhouse.

Three-time Academy Award nominee Laura Linney plays Sherlock's caregiver and housekeeper Mrs Munro, while Colin Starkey (Inspector Lewis) is his former partner Dr John Watson.

Mr Holmes reunites McKellen with director Bill Condon, after previously collaborating on Gods and Monsters.

The movie will be released on June 19 in the UK and July 17 in the US.
