Thousands of Montrealers will fill the streets Sunday, May 1 as they march to commemorate all the genocides of the twentieth century, The Suburban reports.

The date, also Mother’s Day, was selected this year as a way to honor the courage and strength shown by women who survived death marches, camps, and other trials as they struggled to keep future generations alive.

The March for Genocide Prevention and Humanity, or M4H, is a collaboration of Montreal’s Tutsi, Jewish, and Armenian communities, and got its start in 2015 when it staged a march in honor of the 1.5 million lives lost in the 1915 Armenian Genocide. Now, it is a way for all communities who have witnessed the horror of genocide in their pasts to come together and ask for peace.

The march route will go from Cabot Square (near Atwater Metro) to the Quartier des Spectacles, where participants will hear from MP Jason Kenney as well as representatives from various cultural organizations as they speak about genocide in the twentieth century. Many municipal councilors from Montreal and Laval are also participating in the march.
