HBO Europe picks up Slovakian Oscar contender “Eva Nova”

HBO Europe has picked up Eva Nova, Slovakia’s entry for the 2017 foreign-language Oscars, for its pay-TV service across Central and Eastern Europe, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.

The drama, directed by Marko Skop, premiered in Toronto last year, where it won the international critics Fipresci award.

HBO Europe will take the feature in 15 countries, including Poland, Hungary and the Czech and Slovak Republics. The channel will have a three-year rights window for the film, starting Jan. 1, 2017.

Emilia Vasaryova stars as the titular character in the film, a once famous and respected actress who descended into alcoholism. Now 62, Eva Nova is fighting to stay sober and to reconnect with her estranged son.
