CJ-CGV, South Korea’s largest multiplex chain, has teamed with U.S. production outfit Let It Play to make “We Kill Death”. The movie will be the first English-language film made for Screen X, a proprietary projection technology that uses a multiplex’s side walls as well as the main screen, Variety said.

It will be directed by Eric Brevig who previously directed “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” He previously served as visual effects supervisor for “Men in Black” and “The Maze Runner.”

Alex Ginzburg, best known for producing the first-person sci fi action movie “Hardcore Henry,” will produce.

Since its launch, the technology has been adopted by some 15 Korean and Chinese films. They include Kim Jee-woon’s 30-minute short film, “The X,” which screened at the Busan festival in 2013. While previous Screen X films only adopted the technology at the post-production stage, “Death” will be designed and shot as a Screen X-specific production, using three cameras to shoot the 270-degree field of vision.

“Death” is set to start production in the first half of 2017. It is aimed at a theatrical release in the second half.

The film sees the story of death-defying skywalkers who climb high-rise buildings to pose for photographs. While the main cast is yet to be confirmed, it is confirmed to star amateur stuntmen Mustang Wanted, Oleg Cricket, Vitaliy Raskalov and Vadim Makhorov.

“As a filmmaker, I try to engage the audience in the stories that I’m telling. Screen X is a technology that allows me to immerse the audience better in the film that we’re telling,” Brevig said at a presentation Friday at CGV’s flagship Yongsan multiplex in Seoul.

During the event, Choi Byung-hwan, CEO of CJ CGV 4DPlex, said CGV would continue to expand the technology to major markets including the U.S. and China.

The company’s Screen X lineup for 2017 included Chinese director Zhang Yimou’s “The Great Wall,” Jackie Chan’s “Kungfu Yoga,” and Korean director Ryoo Seung-wan’s period drama “Gunhamdo.”
