“True Detective” to return for season 3 with David Milch

"True Detective" is revived for season 3 with HBO veteran David Milch coming on board. The "Deadwood" creator will reportedly join series creator Nic Pizzolatto, who has penned at least the first two episodes of the potential third season, AceShowbiz said.

According to EW which first reported the news, the extent of Pizzolatto and Milch's collaboration is still early days and not yet formalized. HBO has not yet granted a third season order for the crime anthology series and it would not confirm the news.

"True Detective" was loved by critics and fans when it debuted its first season in 2014, with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the lead roles. The second season starring Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams aired in 2015, but it received mixed reviews.

HBO programming president Casey Bloys previously said he's open for the possibility of another installment of "True Detective". "We're open to someone else writing it with Nic supervising it; it's a really valuable franchise for us," he said, noting the show's average viewership of 11 million viewers. "It's not dead; I'm just not sure we have the right take for a third season - yet."
