Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said it is necessary to introduce effective international monitoring on the the Nagorno Karabakh contact line and the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Pashinyan on Thursday, July 23 urged a permanent monitoring mechanism that would record when and which side violated the ceasefire.

He said that the mechanism that existed before the epidemic is in fact very limited, and maintained that aն improved monitoring mission could be implemented by the office of the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office.

"Direct communication between the militaries is an effective tool for preventing and clarifying incidents," Pashinyan said.

The Armenian PM's remarks came after renewed violence on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. The situation escalated on July 12, with Azerbaijan having launched several unsuccessful infiltration attempts throughout the next week. The Azerbaijani military also used artillery and combat drones to target civilian homes in several border settlements in Armenia. Five servicemen of the Armenian army were killed, while Azerbaijan reported 12 deaths.
