Terry Davis's statements may impede Armenian-Azeri dialogue

PanARMENIAN.Net - "The post occupied by Terry Davis, in our opinion, should oblige him to avoid prejudice. However, we once again witness the opposite and express regret over the fact," NKR National Assembly Speaker Ashot Ghulian said when commenting on CoE Secretary General Terry Davis's statement that the international community will not recognize the forthcoming presidential election in NKR.

Terry Davis's opinion is characteristic for conservative political circles in Europe, which do not perceive positive developments of world politics. Statements of the kind are destructive, since they tell on the public opinion and hamper establishment of a dialogue between the Armenian and Azeri people and establishment of neighborly relations.

"Confirming independence via a national referendum December 10, 1991 the NKR people took up the line of a democratic and jural state. I would like to remind that election is the form of direct expression of people's will and the highest demonstration of democracy. Development of democratic institutes proceeds from the interests of the NKR people and the level of this development is not, fortunately, determined by Terry Davis's subjective opinion. Elections held in the Nagorno Karabakh republic could be exemplary for the other states where change of power is exercised contrary to international criteria. Some representatives of international organizations seem to be disinterested in positive processes in the region. I would not like to think that they prefer chaos and lawlessness," the NKR NA Speaker said.

Statements of the kind are incapable to stop democratization processes, according to him. "With adopting the Constitution December 10, 2006 our people proved adherence to democratic development. Those who are skeptic about our elections may visit NKR as observers and form their own opinion on the outcomes. I think before making virtual assessments, one should just once participate in such elections," Ashot Ghulian said, the NKR MFA press office reports.
