Politics: There can be no Turks among peacemakers in KarabakhThe issue of assigning foreign peacemakers in the region becomes more topical. January 28, 2006 Recently, Secretary General of the Turkish National Security Council Mehmet Yigit Alpogan made quite an unexpected announcement concerning the role of Ankara in the resolution of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Confirming Turkey's wish to take part in the peacemaking process in Karabakh, he said hat the unwillingness of Yerevan to let Turks take part in the conflict settlement «testifies to the non-constructive position of Armenia». It would be naïve to suppose that Turks really believe in the possibility of their participation in the peacemaking mission. There is no doubt that in reality the initiative is meant to provoke Yerevan to actions, which can be represented as expression of unfriendliness. ![]() |
