Year by year it is becoming harder and harder for Turkey to confront recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Sometimes it seems Ankara has concentrated all its efforts on preventing recognition of the crimes committed by the Young Turks in 1915-1923. It seems at first sight that every year after April 24 Turkey sighs with relief and falls back into her old ways. But everything is much more serious this time: at stake is reputation of the powers that were the guarantors for the signing and further ratification of the Protocols on normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations.

The government of Armenia accepted the proposal of Moscow Cinema LLC directorate on the gratuitous alienation of the land area on Abovyan 18 str., Yerevan, a public property occupied by Moscow Cinema Open-Air Hall, for the benefit of Holy Etchmiadzin, thus conferring it a property right to construct a new church on the site of former Surb Poghos-Petros Church, dismantled by Soviet authorities. Such a hasty governmental decision caused unrest among Armenian civil society, who now use every chance to express their disagreement on the issue. The fact is rather surprising, for Armenians’ passion for church-building is famous worldwide. It is the choice of the construction site that causes people’s discontent.

Political week in Armenia began with a four-day parliamentary sitting. “Turkish authorities, signing a document and making statements contradicting the latter, can’t be taken seriously,” NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan told a news conference in Yerevan. According to him, such actions show that Turkish authorities disrespect both themselves and the agreements made. “As to ratification of the Protocols, let me repeat that we discussed the issue with our coalition partners and stick to the position already announced: Armenian parliament will take no further steps until Turkey ratifies the Protocols,” Abrahamyan emphasized.
