Harvest won’t be rich this year

Interest-free loans can partially help farmers prepare for the next season.

Harvest will not be rich this year. Late frosts, pelting rains and hail damaged 30-40% of apricots. According to preliminary calculations, 30 000–45 000 tons will be gathered against 85 000 tons reaped last year. Presently, the price for 1kg of apricots is AMD 2000 ($5). Sweet cherries cost AMD 700-900, apples are sold for AMD 700-800. The prices for vegetables are not law either: cucumbers cost AMD 300-400 while tomatoes are sold for AMD 600-800.

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Armenian Minister of Agriculture seems bewildered and conducts monitoring to find out the amount of damage. Armavir, Shirak, Lori and Vayots Dzor marzes are reported to have suffered most of all.

Agriculture Minister assures that the prices will agricultural products will not be catastrophically high this year. “Inflation is controlled by the authorities,” Gerasim Alaverdyan said.

Nevertheless, the hope for eating organic fruit and vegetables is waning.

A representative of the National Consumer Association said that the norms of pesticide usage are violated in some hothouses. Although 7 days should pass after spraying the plants, farmers often pick them to sell the next day.

Besides, moles become widespread. Problems persist, although the government assures that AMD 300 million was assigned to control distribution of gnawing animals.

To assist farmers, the government decided to allow them interest-free loans with total amount of AMD 100 million.
