Armenian communication files registered sustainable growth

Review of August 30 – September 6 telecommunications and information technology events.

Proceeds of the communication field totaled AMD 95.4bln in Armenia in January-July 2010 that is 3.2% higher as compared with the same period in 2009. - 923 computers were assembled in Armenia during the reporting period, registering 17% growth compared with January-July 2009. 198 computers were assembled in July 2010.

6.5% drop was recorded in the net operating revenues of ArmenTel CJSC in the second quarter of 2010 as compared with the same period in 2009, totaling AMD 17bln. Meanwhile, the most considerable decline was observed in mobile telephony (-8.3%). Mobile revenues totaled AMD 6.7bln, while fixed-line revenues amounted to AMD 10.3bln. The number of broadband Internet users grew by 158.9%, totaling 49.7thous subscribers. Meanwhile, 16.7% growth was recorded in the number of subscribers of ArmenTel (Beeline brand) company’s mobile telephony in the second quarter of 2010 as compared with the same period in 2009, amounting to 567,000. Besides, 13.3% growth was recorded in monthly MOUs (subscriber’s minutes of use) as compared with the second quarter of 2009 (270.1 minutes.)

ArmenTel CJSC will gift USB modems to its mobile internet subscribers. Subscribers of Night and Unlimited tariffs will get USB modem for free in case of annual subscription.

Yerevan-Masis-Ararat 50.5 km 10 GBps bandwidth fiber optic line was put into operation. The first section, laid as result of cooperation between the South Caucasus Railways and GNC-Alfа, covers the towns of Masis, Ararat, Artashat and Vedi. The project envisages optic line construction in the direction of Charentsavan, Hrazdan, Sevan, Dilijan, Etchmiadzin and Armavir. As GNC-Alfa Director General Hayk Farmanyan stated during the presentation, GNC-Alfa invested USD 2 million in the project; with SCR providing the infrastructure and sponsoring construction works. 270 km fiber optic line is scheduled to be laid till yearend; another 250 km will be operative by 2011. Construction works are performed in the framework of 2010 cooperation agreement concluded by SCR and GNC-Alfа.

Orange Armenia has announced a new action timed to the start of a new academic year. During two months to come, the company will be offering phones and calls for only AMD 1. Till October 31, customers can buy special branded Samsung, Nokia or Alcatel handsets for only 1 AMD, by just recharging the account in any Orange shop with AMD 8000 or 12000. The recharged amount can be used for any service before March 1st, 2011.

Orange has prepared yet another autumn surprise for its customers: all “Let’s Talk” and “Every Month” subscribers can make off-net calls to all national mobile or fixed networks for only AMD 1/minute during the whole day of September 1st. Moreover, the same AMD 1/min rate will be applied to all calls made to Orange numbers before October 31.

VivaCell-MTC, Publicus Hepta (HP representative), Essential Solutions, AcTrade-Soft, Sabio Strategc Solutions and Intracall joined the Union of Information Technology Enterprises (UITE), bringing the number of members to 47. UITE was founded in 2000 as a non-profit, non-governmental association of ICT companies of Armenia.
