Armenian police refutes media reports on inflated number of voters

Armenian police commented on media reports saying the police allegedly overstated the list of voters which does not correspond to the published statistical data, as well as the number of those leaving and arriving in Armenia. The police press service says these reports do not comply with reality.

The police emphasized that the voter register is drafted in line with the legislation, and 2.311 million voters were included in the list during the presidential elections held on February 18, 2008.

Meanwhile, 2.482 mln people are eligible for the May parliamentary voting as of February 15, 2012; thus the difference makes 170 083 people.

According to the police, the increased number of votes is stipulated by the fact that 359.6 thousand voters were not involved in 2008 presidential voting list: 185.2 thousand were under age of 18 prior to February 2008.

Another 174.3 thousand were registered after February 19, 2008, of which 27780 were foreign citizens who got Armenian citizenship.

In addition, 188.6 thousand voters were withdrawn from the register, of them 122.4 thousand being dead.

The police pointed out that departure from Armenia does not serve as legal basis for taking the people off the register.
