David Lynch’s “Crazy Clown Time” video released

David Lynch tested the boundaries of the adage “be careful what you wish for” with the release of a bizarre new video for “Crazy Clown Time.” Although the acclaimed filmmaker hasn’t produced anything feature-length since 2006’s Inland Empire, he helmed the clip himself, which accompanies the latest single from his 2011 album, also titled Crazy Clown Time, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Posted on Noisey’s Youtube channel, the clip runs seven minutes and features an ensemble of oddball characters who provide percussion in a nondescript backyard while Lynch’s lyrics flatly detail what’s happening. As he sings “Suzie, who tore her shirt off completely,” for example, a curvy blonde pulls off her blouse and starts writhing on the ground. Several hours after the video was first posted, Lynch tweeted a link to the video with a predictably cryptic message: “Be the 1st on your block to see the Advancement of the Human Race which Conway Twitty spoke so clearly,” he said.

In the early 2000s, Lynch became increasingly fascinated with web content, and produced several web series with former collaborators including Naomi Watts, Laura Elena Harring, Laura Dern and Harry Dean Stanton. Other than a concert for Duran Duran he directed in 2011, however, “Crazy Clown Time” marks Lynch’s first return to the mainstream – even tentatively – since the release of Inland Empire.
