WE WISH A NEW STAGE OF ARMENIAN-TURKISH RELATIONS TO BEGIN UPON KOCHARIAN REELECTION, TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTRY REPRESENTATIVE SAID
"We wish a new stage in our relations to begin upon Robert Kocharian's reelection as the Armenian president," - deputy secretary general of the Turkish foreign ministry department of the Caucasus and Middle Asia Ertan Tezgor said. In his words, as reported by "Mediamax" agency, "Armenia should make the first step in the rapprochement process." The Turkish diplomat enumerated problems, due to which Turkey has not established diplomatic relations with Armenia yet. First, "Armenia does not recognize the Turkish-Soviet treaties of 1921, and thus does not recognize the territorial integrity of our country," - he said. He also referred to the Armenian foreign policy course aimed at international recognition of the Armenian genocide. As a third factor the Turkish diplomat mentioned the item that "Armenia does not withdraw its troops from Azeri territories." E. Tezgor said that official Yerevan statements that Turkey held a blockade against Armenia "are false." To the contrary, he said, Turkey has rendered Armenia two corridors through its air space. Moreover, in his words, "Armenian citizens can freely visit Turkey by getting a visa on the frontier." Within the first 9 months of the last year some 12.5 thousand Armenian citizens visited our country, E. Tezgor reported. As a gesture of good will Turkey has invited Armenia to become member of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, the diplomat said. He expressed an opinion that "if Armenia begins showing respect to international law, it will be able to establish good relations with all countries of the region." "If this is the case, Turkey will certainly make a step towards Armenia," - the Turkish foreign ministry representative said. In Tezgor's words, the Nagorno Karabakh conflict is the main obstacle on the way of establishing political stability in the South Caucasus. "Turkey actively participates in the OSCE Minsk group activities and highlights it. We maintain bilateral contacts between representatives of Armenia and Azerbaijan," - Tezgor stated. Turkey is ready to support a solution of the problem, which is advantageous for both parties and it is ready to participate in the implementation of new mechanisms to settle the Karabakh problem, the Turkish diplomat emphasized.
