8 PEOPLE KILLED IN MINE ACCIDENTS IN NAGORNO KARABAKH IN 2004
Since the beginning of 2004 24 mine and UXO related casualties, including 8 deaths have been registered in Nagorno Karabakh. The number of accidents this year has already surpassed the last year's statistics (21 casualties, 9 of which fatal). As reported in the Stepanakert Office of The HALO Trust British humanitarian organization engaged in mine clearing in Nagorno Karabakh, the statistics exceed that of the last year as in 2003 the number of victims was 21, 9 of them were killed. According to the source, since the beginning of June 4 accidents have already taken place. The first accident happened on June 3, 2004 near the village Meghvadzor, Kashatag (Lachin) region. The victims were: Armen Hakopian, 1964, and Andranik Mossian, 1982, both from village Tumi, Hadrout region. While collecting plants one of them (A.A.) stepped on an antipersonnel mine. His countryman approached hastily to the site intending to help and initiated the second PMN-2 mine. As a result one of them lost his right leg, the other - left one. The second accident took place on June 8th 2 km east from village Mirushen, Martouni region. Five villagers went to the forest for wood gathering. On the way back, the truck loaded with wood drove over an anti-tank mine, initiating it with its back tire. The accident resulted in injuries to Arushanian Ararat, 1964, leg fracture, and David Avakian - light physical injuries.
