Israeli envoy links Arab Spring with Ottoman Empire’s break-up

On May 29, Israel's ambassador to South Sudan presented a report on “Identification, religion, minorities and policy in the Middle East and beyond its borders” at RA NAS Institute of Oriental Studies.

“The Arab Spring developments are linked to the break-up of the Ottoman Empire and emergence of independent Arab states,”Haim Koren said.

The envoy cited the situation in Iraq and Syria as an example, noting the problem of national and religious minorities, as well as globalization and IT development as the reason behind instability.

“The policy Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Iran and Iraq pursue should be considered in the context of internal problems,” he said.
