ANATOLY DRYUKOV: OPENING TRAIN FERRY PASSAGE KAVKAZ-POTI TO PROMOTE TRADE COOPERATION BETWEEN ARMENIA AND RUSSIA
«Within the 6 years of my stay in Armenia many changes occurred both in the republic itself and in the Armenian -Russian relations,» Russian Ambassador to Armenia Anatoly Dryukov stated in the course of the final press conference due to his completing the diplomatic mission in Armenia. Organizing the arrival of the President to the hosting country is the summit of the activities of an Ambassador, Anatoly Dryukov noted, reminding about the recent visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Armenia. The Russian diplomat said he was deeply satisfied with the level of political cooperation between Armenia and Russia. He noted active contacts of the Russian and Armenian Presidents, Prime Ministers, Ministers, Department heads. «I thought that Russia and India contact actively, however upon the arrival in Yerevan I made certain that India is far behind Armenia in this respect,» the diplomat noted. He specially emphasized the durable contacts between Foreign Ministries of Russia and Armenia. It allows coordinating the actions at the international arena and pursuing a line, issuing from the interests of the two countries, he added. Mr. Dryukov noted that the promotion of the military and military-technical cooperation between Armenia and Russia in recent years. In his words, there were reprimands that the trade and economic cooperation between the two countries was not so active, however there were reasons for that and the isolation of Armenia from Russia had negative consequences for the trade relations. Today the trade between Russia and Armenia is stable, Russia is the main investor in the economy of Armenia. In 2004 Russian investment in the economy of Armenia made $70 million, A. Dryukov noted. «I think that it is a very important achievement in bilateral relations. We live under the conditions of the market relations and Russian capital going to Armenia evidences the republic and the expected income are stable,» the diplomat noted. Within the context of trade cooperation between the two countries Mr. Dryukov noted the opening of the Kavkaz port-Poti port train-ferry passage, which is a break-through in the many years' blockade and an important achievement in development of economic and commercial ties. At that he added that tariffs for «the Armenian cargo» are established in compliance with internal standards of Russia, which will allow Armenian entrepreneurs increasing the cooperation. In Mr. Dryukov's words, last year there was certain decrease of cooperation in the diamond industry. The Ambassador said he was sure that a corresponding agreement will be reached this year and the cooperation in the field will be restored.
