HP becomes platinum member of Linux Foundation

PanARMENIAN.Net - HP has booked a seat at the Linux Foundation's top table by becoming a platinum member, The Inquirer reports.

The company has been pushing Linux on its servers for a number of years and was previously a gold member of the Linux Foundation, the non-profit body that oversees Linux promotion.

According to HP, its upgraded position in the Linux Foundation will help it maximize its investment in Linux.

Like every other major server vendor, HP has embraced Linux for some time and while the firm killed off the Linux based WebOS, it did open source the operating system, taking a leaf out of the Linux community's book.

Eileen Evans, VP and associate general counsel of Cloud Computing and Open Source at HP said, "Linux is a strategic asset for all major technology companies. With our Linux Foundation Platinum membership, we will have a variety of ways to maximize our investment in Linux and collaborative development that advances our own business as well as greater industry innovation."

The Linux Foundation said that becoming a platinum member will allow HP to have a seat on its board of directors alongside firms such as IBM, Intel, Oracle, Qualcomm and Samsung, and be directly involved in developing Linux, promoting events and supporting Linux's business goals.

Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation said, "Because of this history and innate knowledge of software development, HP understands that Linux and collaborative development can benefit its business across its product portfolio. We're looking forward to the work we can accomplish with HP."
