GERMANY READY TO OPEN ARCHIVES
"We wish the Armenian-Turkish relations normalized. Germany is ready to assist the process and open its sources for the historians", German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder stated in Ankara. During the meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan Mr. Schroeder supported the proposal on the formation of a joint commission for the investigation of the fact of the Armenian Genocide. "I hope Armenia understands the delicacy of the situation", the German Chancellor noted. When touching upon the possibility of Turkey's EU membership Gerhard Schroeder stated that the referendum on the European Constitution scheduled for May 29 in France will by no means affect the process. In his turn Erdogan expressed concern over "Bundestag's appeal to Turkey to assess its past", RFE/RL reported.
