Uruguay may become first state to recognize Artsakh independence

Theoretically, Uruguay may become the first country to recognize the independence of the Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) republic, member of the Uruguayan parliament’s foreign relations committee said.

“Recognition is a political process which needs gradual development,” Ruben Martinez Huelmo told journalists in NKR.

Commenting of the visit of Uruguayan delegation to Artsakh, Mr. Huelmo said, “traveling to Karabakh is not a particularly brave move, it’s merely a step.”

In 1965, Uruguay became the first country to officially recognize and condemn the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.
