Armenia to focus on local democracy during CoE chairmanship

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Minister of Territorial Administration Armen Gevorgyan met today, Dec 19 with the outgoing head of the Council of Europe Office in Armenia Silvia Zehe.

Minister Gevorgyan voiced confidence for the new office head to continue cooperation with similar efficiency.

Issues related to the reforms in the territorial administration sector in the framework of 2011-2014 cooperation program were further discussed.

Minister Gevorgyan noted that Armenia will focus on strengthening of local democracy and boosting the efficiency of the IT sector during its chairmanship of Council of Europe Committee of Ministers.

The two officials noted that exchange of experience with other Council of Europe member countries will contribute to strengthening of local democratic values and fulfillment of new ideas.

Dwelling on the USAID-elaborated document on “Strategic Approaches of Further Development of the Local Self-Government (LSG) and Decentralization of Power of the Republic of Armenia”, Minister Gevorgyan noted that it is in line with the cooperation program with the Council of Europe, press service of RA Ministry of Territorial Administration reported.
