ARMENIAN NUCLEAR POWER PLANT TO CLOSE ONLY IF ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES AVAILABLE
The Armenian nuclear power plant will close only if alternative energy sources are available. As reported by "Arka" agency, Armenian minister of energy Armen Movsisian stated. He noted that the EU earlier demands to close the station by 2004 couldn't be met. "The EU demand will be accepted when engineering and financial opportunities of alternative capacities appear," - the minister said. In his words, the tariff and the production volume should be just equivalent. Thereupon A.Movsisian emphasized that the 5-th block of the Hrazdan thermal power plant cannot be considered an alternative to the nuclear plant, as the electric energy generated by it is much more expensive. Let us note that the European Union has in its time expressed willingness to render $100 million to secure the plant. Nevertheless, in the minister's words, these funds are not sufficient for creating alternative capacities.
