RA Parliament Prolonged Presence of Armenian Peacekeepers in Iraq
The Armenian parliament decided to prolong the presence of Armenian peacekeepers in Iraq for another 12 months. According to Armenian Defense Minister Serge Sargsyan, the experience proved the sending of the Armenian contingent to Iraq was a right decision. He also noted that the presence of the Armenian peacekeepers in Iraq "secures Armenia's participation in international processes and is a guarantee of security."
To remind, the first 46-member Armenian platoon was sent to Iraq in January 2005 and returned this June. It comprised sappers, truck drivers and doctors and was placed under the command of the Polish contingent. The second shift consisting of 45 members departed for Iraq on July 13. The expenses are covered by the U.S. government.
Earlier Serge Sargsyan stated that is response for expressing readiness to join the campaign "Armenia is expecting consolidation of its security, opening of borders as well as balanced approach towards the South Caucasian form the states and international organizations interested in establishment of peace and stability in the region," reported IA Regnum.
