Some European Parliament Members Demand to Close Orhan Pamuk Case
A collection of signatures aimed to press upon Turkey to close legal proceedings against well-known Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk was launched in the European Parliament. Marmara Istanbul-based newspaper reports that the initiative was taken by Dimitrious Papadirupoulis, Feleknaz Uzhdan and Panagirs Pegledis. The document maintains the demand to recognize the court proceedings vs. Orhan Pamuk, Akos newspaper editor-in-chief Hrank Dink and publisher Rahip Jakaroglu as illegal. To pass the document the signatures of half of 732 European Parliament members should be garnered till March 15. Newsweek writes that Turkey, which is likely to be included in the list of "out-states", is trying to bind it with two events - the Pamuk case and Austria's presidency in the European Union. The newspaper underscores that the court proceedings vs. Pamuk damages Turkey's authority.
