WhatsApp passes 250 million users milestoneJune 21, 2013 - 15:28 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - WhatsApp has reportedly passed the milestone of 250 million active users, Digital Spy said. The messaging service's subscriber figures see it bring serious competition to market leaders such as Skype and Facebook Messenger, according to the Wall Street Journal. Microsoft-owned Skype has 280 million monthly active users, but has been up and running for six years longer than WhatsApp. Although Facebook does not divulge specific users figures for its Messenger mobile app, WhatsApp's position as the most popular premium app on iTunes in the US could be a concern to the social network. WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum previously boasted that the service carries more messaging traffic than Facebook, and has more monthly users than Twitter, which is frequented by more than 200 million people. The service announced last week that it handled a record 27 billion messages in a 24-hour period.
