Taner Akcam Promotes Armenian Genocide Recognition
Armenian people pay high tribute to Turkish scholar Taner Akcam for his aspiration for the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, Director of the Institute of History of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, Ashot Melkonyan told PanARMENIAN.Net reporter. He noted that the words about Taner Akcam he uttered several days ago were given a wrong interpretation. "I did not say Taner Akcam acts as he is ordered by Ankara," Ashot Melkonyan said. According to the Armenian historian, Taner Akcam and the Armenian party have some disagreements on the approaches to the Armenian Genocide issue, specifically as regards the compensations to be paid by Ankara in case of recognition of the Genocide. Ashot Melkonyan pointed out to the positive fact that the articles by Taner Akcam, who opposes the authorities on the Armenian Genocide issue, are being published in Turkey. Turkish public and some formal circles attempt to demonstrate via Akcam's articles how liberal and democratic modern Turkey is. As a matter of fact they try to foresee the further steps by the Armenian party that can follow the formal recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Ankara.
