Yerevan Mayor to address public over transport price hike

During the July 25 government meeting, Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan dwelled on the ongoing protests against transport fare increase.

“A strong civil society is developing in Armenia and we should take it into account when taking decisions,” PM Sargsyan said, adding that he understanding the people’s motivation.

“Although any decision to raise the transport fare is taken by the city administration, we cannot stay aside. Moreover, public hearings on pressing issues should be organized ,” he said.

Deputy Mayor Kamo Areyan said, in turn, said that Mayor Taron Margaryan will address the public over the price hike later in the day.

The transport fare in Yerevan was raised from AMD 100 to 150 on July 20. Protests against the increase have been held since then and many continue to pay the previous price. Besides, some car owners joined the protests by transporting residents for free.
