Samsung showcases printer made from cardboard

PanARMENIAN.Net - Samsung has showcased a design concept for a printer with an outer shell made from cardboard, Digital Spy said.

The Samsung Origami was designed to raise awareness about environmental issues by cutting down on the amount of plastic used during manufacturing and forcing the owner to consider how much paper is used in the printing process.

Designed by Min-chul Kim, Sang-in Lee and Seung-wook Jeong, the Origami would require users to put the device together themselves based on detailed instructions printed on its cardboard casing.

The Origami is one of three design concepts for a new laser printer from Samsung that was recognised by the International Design Excellence Awards 2013.

Another printer dubbed Clip has similar interior parts to the Origami, but is encased in compressed polyethylene plastic that can be clipped together by the customer, eliminating the need for screws and glue during manufacturing.

"There's no barrier for production," Samsung senior designer Juehyun Jung told Wired. "After a few engineering problems are solved, it can be offered about 10% cheaper, compared to other products in the same segment."

The third and final design was referred to as Mate, a highly customisable printer comprised of modular panels in a variety of colours that users can mix and match.
