Amazon “exploring own wireless network launch possibility”

PanARMENIAN.Net - Amazon is reportedly exploring the possibility of launching its own wireless network to allow users to connect its devices to the internet.

The online retail giant is carrying out tests using technology provided by satellite communications company Globalstar, Digital Spy said citing Bloomberg.

Amazon's researchers are said to have carried out the trial in the vicinity of its Lab126 research centre in Cupertino, the site which engineers and develops its Kindle products.

The report suggests that Amazon has ambitions to move beyond e-commerce and hardware-making in a bid to provide an all-encompassing experience for its customers.

Google has made similar strides in the US, launching high-speed, fibre-based broadband networks in 17 cities.

Neither Amazon nor Globalstar has officially confirmed that any tests have taken place, but the latter revealed that it has been working with a "major technology company".
