VLADIMIR PUTIN'S VISIT TO BAKU POSTPONED AGAIN
Russian president Vladimir Putin's visit to Azerbaijan planned July 22 is put off again. As "Vremya Novostey" Russian newspaper writes according to the notes of the sources in Azeri diplomatic circles, the Kremlin did not receive any confirmation from Baku that Azeri president Heydar Aliyev would return by this time from "Gulhane" Turkish military hospital where he had been directly taken for the regular checkup July 8. Thus the third attempt of the Russian president to meet with the Azeri leader was not a success. As an anonymous and close to the Azeri leadership expert told "Vremya Novostey" newspaper, elder Aliyev considers the discussion of the problem of passing the power to the younger Aliyev with his Russian colleague to be the matter of the utmost importance. Baku would like to enlist the support of Moscow on this issue in order to demonstrate Washington that in case of its disapproval of the "family" variant of the "throne succession", Baku can establish closer relations with Moscow and Tehran. Besides Iranian president Mohammad Khatami's visit is expected in Baku.
