Hungarian Court to Announce Safarov Verdict Today
Today in Budapest the Hungarian court will announce the verdict on Ramil Safarov accused of the murder of Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan. The last court session was held April 4. The Hungarian prosecutor demanded life sentence, at that 30 years without the right of amnesty. The prosecutor said the murder was committed with extreme cruelty and is a threat for the national security of Hungary. He also underscored that when committing the crime Safarov was sane. For her part Hungarian lawyer Gabriela Kaspar stated that Margaryan's murder should be classified as genocide since it was committed through national hatred.

February 19, 2004 lieutenant of the Armed Forces of Armenia Gurgen Margaryan, sent to Budapest to take English courses within the NATO Partnership for Peace Program, was brutally hacked by Azeri officer, who took the same courses. Safarov is indicted in compliance with article 116.2 of the Criminal Code of Hungary (murder, committed with special cruelty, and attempt at lives of over one person), which provides for punishment varying from imprisonment of 10-15 years to life sentence.
