Roadside Attractions nab Berlin Film Fest thriller “’71”

Roadside Attractions and Black Label Media have acquired U.S. distribution rights to acclaimed TV director Yann Demange’s thriller “’71” which premiered last month at the Berlin Film Festival. Pic is being considered for an early 2015 release, Variety said.

The film, which stars Brit actor Jack O’Connell, who also will topline Angelina Jolie’s prisoner-of-war biopic “Unbroken,” takes place over a single night following a young British soldier, who is abandoned accidentally by his unit during a riot on the streets of Belfast in 1971.

Variety’s Guy Lodge called the film “a vivid, shivery survival thriller that turns the red-brick residential streets of Belfast into a war zone of unconscionable peril.”

Gregory Burke wrote the screenplay, with Warp Films’ Robin Gutch and Angus Lamont of Crab Apple producing.

The deal was announced by Roadside co-prexies Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff, along with Black Label Media’s Molly Smith.

“’71″ is a “thrilling debut by the major new director Yann Demange, who delivers astonishing action sequences and tense character drama, with Jack O’Connell giving a knockout performance as a soldier trapped behind enemy lines,” Cohen said.
