iPhone 6 chip orders exceed 50 million units, likely to remain highOctober 6, 2014 - 14:15 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Orders for chipsets for production of the iPhone 6 devices in the first quarter of 2015 have exceeded 50 million units, according to industry sources, DigiTimes reported. The order momentum for the chips for iPhone 6 devices in the first quarter of 2015 will be as strong as that in the fourth quarter of 2014, indicating strong market demand of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the sources said. Apple has asked chipset suppliers to prepare chips for production of up to 200-250 million units of the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch, they said, according to DigiTimes. Deducting some 30-40 million units of chips for the Apple Watch, shipments of related chips will be enough for production of over 200 million units of iPhone 6 devices, meeting Apple's goal of shipping the same amount of iPhone 6 and iPhone6 Plus, said the sources, noting that Apple is likely to reach the goal much earlier than expected. The strong order visibility for chips for the iPhone6 devices also indicates that the wafer production at TSMC's 8- and 12-inch fabs will remain tight in the first quarter of 2015, the sources added. The leadtime for wafer shipments has been running at 12-15 weeks recently and is unlikely to shorten for the time being, they said.
