Technology companies Apple and Facebook are offering female workers the chance to freeze their eggs so that they can push on with work and their careers, V3 reports.

Apple is open about the offer, saying in a statement that the option is one of many designed to aid staffers in their career advance.

"Apple cares deeply about our employees and their families, and we are always looking at new ways our health programs can meet their needs," said a spokesperson.

"We continue to expand our benefits for women, with a new extended maternity leave policy, along with cyropreservation and egg storage as part of our extensive support for infertility treatments. We also offer an Adoption Assistance program, where Apple reimburses eligible expenses associated with the legal adoption of a child. We want to empower women at Apple to do the best work of their lives as they care for loved ones and raise their families."

Women are heavily outnumbered in the technology workplace. In some companies, like Microsoft, Google, Apple and Twitter, the ratio is seven men to three women.

While the egg-freezing offer could be taken as a positive step in attracting women into technology careers, there could be concern that the programs are designed to encourage women at the involved firms to put off starting a family and instead priorities their job, to the benefit of the employer, V3 says.
