Karabakh conflict discussed in ParisOctober 27, 2014 - 22:22 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan met in Paris with his French counterpart François Hollande to discuss Armenian-French bilateral relations, as well as regional issues and challenges, specifically the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. Thanking the French leader for organizing the meeting, President Sargsyan commended the role of France as a co-chair country of the OSCE Minsk Group. The two men also emphasized that Armenian-French relations are based on common values between the two nations and are getting stronger year by year due to mutual high-level visits, close interparliamentary ties and cooperation within international organizations. Besides, they hailed the developing economic relations, noting that French investments in the Armenian economy have totaled $1 billion. Dwelling on the Karabakh conflict, President Sargsyan reiterated that Armenia stands for peaceful resolution of the conflict and thanked the heads of the OSCE MG co-chair countries efforts aimed at establishment and peace and stability in the region. Later, the Armenian President and Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev had a tête-à-tête meeting that was followed by talks in the presence of OSCE MG co-chairs. A trilateral meeting between the Armenian, French and Azerbaijani Presidents is also scheduled. The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army.
