STX nabs Nicole Kidman's “Secret in Their Eyes” remake

Robert Simonds’ STX Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to the remake of “The Secret in Their Eyes” starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman, Variety said.

The film will begin shooting in January in Los Angeles with Billy Ray directing.

Ejiofor will play an assistant district attorney returning to Los Angeles as a team of investigators uncovers new evidence in a 13-year-old case that may finally convict the savage killer of a child. A shocking, undisclosed development will reveal the lasting toll vengeance takes on a person’s soul.

The project had moved forward at Cannes when Ray, the writer of “Captain Phillips,” signed on to direct the adaptation of the Argentinean pic that won the 2009 Academy Award for foreign-language film. IM Global, which is financing, began selling rights at Cannes.

Route One has come on board as a financer.

The original, directed by Juan Jose Campanella and starring Ricardo Darin, was based on the Eduardo Sacheri novel about a romance between a retired judiciary employee and a judge who work to solve a 1974 rape and murder case two decades after it took place.

Mark Johnson will produce along with John Ufland.

CAA arranged financing for the film and represents the film’s domestic rights.

Simonds and Gigi Pritzker partnered in March with private equity giant TPG and China’s Hony Capital on an ambitious production venture that aims to generate as many as 10 movies a year.
