At the meeting, the Armenian leader hailed the year 2014 as promising and important in the development of the Armenian-Uruguayan friendly ties, thus opening up new prospects for the two countries, presidential press service reported. Sargsyan shared warm memories about his state visit to Uruguay and meeting with President Jose Mujica. The Armenian leader asked Astori to pass along his warm greetings to Mujica, and his congratulations and best wishes to newly-elected President Tabare Vazquez. Astori, in turn, welcomed strong ties between the countries, with the parties further reflecting on the opportunities of expanding and promoting economic cooperation between Armenia and Uruguay. Sargsyan and Astori also stressed the importance of inter-parliamentary diplomacy in boosting interstate relations. They agreed that the activities carried out by the two countries’ parliamentary friendship groups have further enhanced the friendship. The Armenian President once again expressed his gratitude to the leadership and people of Uruguay for their invaluable contribution to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in 1965, thus launching the process of international recognition. Sargsyan also expressed his appreciation by Uruguay’s balanced position on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
