Oculus Rift buys 3D mapping firm to turn real world into gameMay 27, 2015 - 17:06 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Oculus Rift now has the potential to turn the world around you into a video game, after the company behind the headset acquired a 3D mapping firm, Digital Spy reports. Facebook-owned Oculus VR has bought out London-based startup Surreal Vision, which specialises in mapping real scenes in 3D onto virtual backdrops. Bringing the fight to Microsoft's HoloLens, Surreal Vision also dabbles in augmented-reality technology, creating virtual objects that users can manipulate in the real world. The acquisition expands Oculus Rift's potential beyond traditional gaming, making it theoretically possible for users to step into truly immersive 3D worlds. Surreal Vision's innovations could also work in conjunction with Nimble VR's motion-tracking technology - which has also been acquired by Oculus VR - further enhancing the virtual-world experience. The startup's founders Richard Newcombe, Renato Salas-Moreno and Steven Lovegrove will work with the Oculus Rift team at their base in Washington.
