Lila (Viola Davis), a grief-stricken mother reeling from her son’s murder, attends a support group where she meets Eve (Jennifer Lopez), who urges her to take matters into her own hands to track down her son’s killers. They soon embark on a journey of vengeance to cope with their grief. “I did understand the emotions,” Lopez said in an interview with TheWrap in January. “Being a mom and loving your child the way you do. What [my character] loses, it’s unspeakable. For me it was about digging into being a single mom, that loneliness, trying to do right by that.” The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. In addition to Davis and Lopez, the film also stars Shea Whigham, Andre Royo, and Aml Ameen. Charles Stone III directed, with Pat Gilfillan writing the screenplay. Davis also served as an executive producer on the film. “Lila & Eve” will debut in theaters July 17.
